Featured Dog of the Month

Ollie

Ollie (left) and friends

Ollie is a great boy and is just recovering from a non-contagious skin disorder. With time, Ollie's fur will be as bright and brilliant as any other Sibe.

Ollie is a typical three year old husky, who gets along with other dogs and small children. He is currently being fostered with two young kids and two large Sibes (shown above). However, Ollie likes to be the dominant dog out of the pack. He will need to go to a home with previous Siberian Husky experience.  He also knows commands such as, "Sit, Come, Heel, Kennel, Up," etc. and is housebroken and crate-trained. What more can you ask for?

The Cognac Fund

Cognac came into our lives from a Staten Island shelter and quickly wiggled his way into our hearts. Almost immediately after he arrived we knew something was seriously wrong. Cognac was epileptic and his seizures were frequent, but his personality was happy-go-lucky. Cognac taught us all so much about this awful disease that stole him from us at just two and a half years of age.  My heart has never been the same since he left us on October 8, 2003. In honor of his memory, The Cognac Fund was established to help provide medical care to homeless dogs for extensive medical expenses. Through this Fund, we feel Cognac's spirit will live on and help others whose fight has just begun.

Letters from our Adopters

You are such a wonderful organization!

I want to tell you how much my two pups have been in my world!  We adopted Meesha many years ago (August 2002) I am not sure if you recall but you found her with another dog and they were both badly burned and under nourished at  a shelter in NYC.  I knew when I saw Meesha I had to have her, something in her eyes! Soon after we adopted Akuma, he came fully loaded with all the accessories a pet owner would want (I wish babies were born that way!)  The two are the best of friends and Meesha even helped us raise kittens!  I could not imagine my life with any other pups!  They are always loving and kind, just what I was looking for!  If it were not for Husky House, I would not have had the opportunity to help a dog recover after such serious trauma!  Meesha still hates the sound of yelling, this I think will never change however I know she is happy, safe, and loved!  Her best bud Akuma is her pal and they never leave the house apart, they really bonded well!  I want to thank you for enriching our lives and doing such a GREAT service to these special pups!  Please enjoy the updated pics and the pups!

Warmest wishes,
~Sara

What the Husky House Does:
"The Snow Project"

Snow - Week 1 - Weighs 22 lbs.

Snow arrived to the House the end of February and had all of us in shock.  Snow was emaciated, diagnosed with stage 4 heartworm, and is epileptic.  The poor soul had also been kept in a filthy environment, which developed into a skin bacterial infection all over his body and caused him to lose most of his fur.  He was rushed to our neurologist where he spent over a week, receiving an MRI and Spinal Tap, as well as being treated by our dermatologist.  The results revealed adult heartworm in the brain and lesions from possible strokes.  All will heal over time but he most likely will always have seizures and will possibly need to remain on Phenobarbital (treatment for seizures) for the rest of his life.

Snow had no expression on his face when he first arrived...our little man had given up, his spirit broken...left all of us here at the House heartbroken at what Snow had endured.  We refused to give up and continued to provide TLC and encourage him to keep going.  Slowly the sparkle in his eyes returned, a little spunk in his step emerged and sure enough that husky spirit

had come through.  Snow now plays with his toys, woo woo's at us and plays with his foster sisters Mika, Onya and Lexie everyday.  His progress so far has amazed us and will continue to improve.

Dogs like Snow are the heart and soul of Husky House.  We hope to count on your support so we can continue our work.  Together, Snow and so many others can have a second chance at life.

Please visit our Fundraisers page often to check on his progress.  There is also a video of him playing!

Snow - Week 10 - Weight 54.5 lbs.

HH Returns to the Pet Expo
Submitted by Mari Kamiya

Once again, the Husky House participated in the annual Super Pet Expo held at the NJ Convention and Expo Center in Edison, NJ.  This 3-day event, which took place February 8 - 10th, was jam-packed with vendors, rescue organizations, exciting animal shows and exhibits and animal lovers alike from across the tri-state area.

For us, the Super Pet Expo is just another way to educate the public about the unique but wonderful breed and the responsibilities of owning a Sibe. It is also an opportunity to recruit volunteers, find potential foster homes or adopters, reunite with previous dogs in our program and their new families, and raise money for our homeless animals.  This year we raised over $1,400 for our rescues through generous donations and selling items such as ribbon magnets (one of our best sellers!), mugs, tagnets, chocolate lollipops (a treat for the attendees) and our famous homemade doggy biscuits baked by the volunteers of the HH Bakery.  Our delicious baked goods included carob, peanut butter and yogurt dipped bones, puppernutters, HH hearts, cinnabones and many more treats for our lovable dogs.

We had a great time at the Super Pet Expo and thank everyone who supported us and stopped by our booth.  Without you, we couldn't have raised as much as we did for our precious rescues.  This event has been a great success for HH.  We enjoy being a part of the Super Pet  Exp and look forward to seeing you there next year.

Special THANK YOU's and WOO WOO's to Karl and his family for sponsoring our booth for the last 5 years.

Husky House Needs You!!
Submitted by Amy Morrison

Rescue groups like Husky House can always use help, but most people don’t realize all the different ways there are to help! The most obvious way to help homeless dogs and cats is to adopt one and provide a forever home. But not everyone can do that, so here are a few other ways you can help.

You can foster a dog or cat and provide a rescue with a home while they wait for a permanent home. Sometimes we need help with transporting an animal. We also need volunteers to do home visits and ensure rescues go to safe, appropriate homes. Maybe you are the person who could offer a foster family a respite for a weekend.

If you are more of a people person, we can always use volunteers for Husky House at our street fairs or at the Super Pet Expo. You can attend a Yappy Hour, a Husky Hour, or have your pet’s picture taken with Santa. Santa always needs helpers too! Come join us for one of our adoption days at Petsmart. If you like to create things, we can always use items to sell at our booths, like braided fleece dog toys, delicious homemade dog biscuits, or we are open to your creative ideas. If you are a talented painter, we could use your help painting huskies on t-shirts, hats, tote bags or pocket books to sell.

Still not finding your niche? Well, Husky House can always use people who can make donations of the items on our website’s wish list at www.huskyhouse.org.

We can use thank you note writers, people who can make follow-up phone calls, and people who take photos. You can donate stamps, computer equipment, digital cameras or phone cards. You can write informative articles for our newsletter. Even passing the word about what we do helps us. You can make monetary donations through PayPal on our website or mail us a check. If you have a garage sale, you can donate a portion of your profits. Some people make donations in honor of a birthday, a pet’s birthday, a bat mitzvah or bar mitzvah; in memory of a pet, friend or loved one; or any other special occasion, or for no special reason. If you are getting married, you can sign up with http://www.idofoundation.org/ and get 10% of your gift registry purchases donated to Husky House. If you just don’t need another thing in your closets, suggest to your friends and family making a donation to Husky House instead of getting you any more “stuff.” If you search the Internet, use www.goodsearch.com and enter Husky House’s name as who you GoodSearch for, to help us raise money. It doesn’t cost you a cent but Husky House earns cash. If you shop on line, use www.goodshop.com, www.igive.com or www.giveline.com to raise money for Husky House.

It’s not about what you give, or how you give; it’s all about how you can help. It’s all very important, it’s all very appreciated and most of all; it ALL very much makes a difference! Thank Woo!!

A Very Special Year...Thank You!

The true heart of Husky House sparkled through the eyes of our 70 plus rescues served this past year.  Husky House, and namely our Founder and President Lorraine Healy, did not hesitate to save the lives and maintain the dignity of some very special rescues.  Naming a few does not do justice to our hearts and made us better people for it, but we want to tell you about a few cases that truly illustrate the spirit of Husky House.

Sugar, who is memorialized in this newsletter, came to us as an older husky with advanced cancer and pneumonia.  She had experienced extreme neglect and her prognosis was poor, but Husky House and Marybeth persisted in making Sugar’s last few months perhaps the best of her life.  After hospitalization and extensive medical care, she went home with Marybeth.  While many would have given up on Sugar, Husky House was committed to giving this sweet girl dignity, love and happiness.

Yogi Bear, a senior Pomeranian, came to us in July, unable to walk, covered in filth and helplessly thrown out on the streets of NYC.

Lorraine found him on a list of dogs for euthanasia and quickly intervened.   Everyone was surprised by this rescue, many thought it was more humane to put him down, but Lorraine somehow knew that she could make a miracle happen.  She took him into her home and heart, cleaned him up, got him desperately needed medical care, taught him to walk and provided him with the love he needed to heal and thrive.  Lorraine even taught this little Pomeranian to howl!  Several months later, Yogi Bear was adopted to his forever home, a loving “pack” of Pomeranians.

And, finally, our three miracle pups of the year were Merlot, Cole and Onyx.  All three of these babies were given a poor prognosis at a very young age.  Merlot has a portosystemic congenital liver shunt, Cole has megaesophagus and Onyx had Parvo.  In all three cases, doctors alluded, and some outright stated, that euthanasia may be the best option.  But, Husky House had hope, love and support on their side.  After three very long and emotional struggles, we are happy to report that all three are happy and flourishing in their “forever” homes.

What a year!  And, these are only a few of our amazing stories.  Without your support, these miracles would not have happened.  We would like to say a big THANK YOU to the following foundations, who have helped us make miracles this past year:

  • The Yukon Fund

  • Petco Foundation

  • LABMED

  • The Goldstock Fund

Husky House is seeking greater funding to be able to save many more precious lives.  Please contact amy@huskyhouse.org with any information or suggestions, or for details, on grants and donations.  Be sure to stay posted for an exciting new Husky House Membership Program coming soon!

Guess Who Found Their Forever Homes?

Heineken was adopted by Raymond and Kim Palestino in February 2008 and now has a new sister Storm.

Onyx was adopted by Stephen and Diane McDonald in March 2008 who report that Onyx is happy, energetic and feeling much better!

Pirate (left) & Razzy (right)

Pirate was adopted by Justin and Kim Carrano in March 2008.  Because of Pirate Justin and Kim will be volunteering with the House.

Razzy was adopted by Eric Suskin and Nicole Zaabadick.  The House could not have found a better home for her and wish the entire family best wishes.

Memoriam
Submitted by Marybeth

Passed away on February 24, 2008

Sugar came to me on December 4th and even though she was not the healthiest looking Husky she was one of the most beautiful I had ever seen.  You could tell that she had not been taken care of but she had such a beautiful color and those blue eyes of hers just made me melt.  In the beginning she would follow me around everywhere I went and as soon as I would sit down she would come up and put her head on my lap and just stare at me with those eyes.  She worked her way right into my heart the first time she did that (which was about 15 minutes after I got her home).  I tried to give her all the love I could and make her as happy as I could.  Even though I only had her for a such such a short time, she was part of my family and we (Cody, Lexa & I) all loved her.  I miss her very much!

Passed away on March 24, 2008

Maggie (above) has passed over the bridge due to the deadly virus of Parvo.  Several days before, her sister Lily died due to the same illness.  They leave Pirate, Bert & Razzy behind.  Both where loved and cherished by their foster parents Jason and Anna.
